Tinkerer, Sailor, Soldier, Surgeon

A Connecticut Yankee


Many of our early patriots were accomplished men of letters—lawyers, judges, planters, and merchants—but relatively few were involved in science and technology. David Bushnell belongs to the latter group. Born in Saybrook, Connecticut, on August 30, 1742, he was the son of a farmer. As the eldest of five children, he grew up working on the family farm near Westbrook. After his father died in 1769, he sold his half interest in the farm to his brother Ezra and entered Yale College in 1771.

While at Yale, he became intrigued by the idea of underwater explosions. An inventive tinkerer by nature, Bushnell successfully combined a black powder charge with a clockwork timing device, creating the first naval mine. He used this knowledge not only in building the underwater mine but also later in making floating torpedoes that exploded on contact. 

He worked with the wealthy New Haven inventor and manufacturer Isaac Doolittle to develop the first mechanically triggered time bomb as well as the first screw propeller. As he worked on developing a practical delivery system for this unique weapon, the start of the American War for Independence gave a new sense of urgency to his efforts. 

By fall that year, he had designed and built the American Turtle (better known simply as Turtle), a primitive submarine. He named it Turtle because it looked like two turtle shells lashed together. It wasn't pretty, but it worked.

This primitive submarine was operated by a single operator, who powered it with two hand-cranked screw propellers. A system of water pumps took in and expelled water to control the craft's climb or descent, which could reach a depth of about 15 feet. The pilot had a small conning tower with several windows. The tower contained a depth gauge and a phosphorus-lit compass. 

The Turtle’s punch was Bushnell’s original clock/mine combination connected to a metal drill engineered to bore through the copper sheathing coating the hulls of British warships. Once the mine was attached and released, the timing mechanism engaged, giving the Turtle one hour to escape before a 150-pound charge exploded, detonated by a flintlock trigger device. 

Bushnell arranged a successful demonstration, essentially a “demval” in today’s acquisition parlance. Present for the event on the Thames River was Connecticut General Israel Putnam, who urged the American government to continue funding for its “full operational capability.”

History was made in the summer of 1776 when the Turtle attacked the British fleet anchored in New York Harbor under the command of Admiral Richard Howe. Unfortunately, Bushnell fell ill, and a sergeant named Ezra Lee volunteered to take his place. On the night of September 6, a pair of whaleboats towed the Turtle offshore, where it began its attack. Pumping feverishly, Lee slowly guided the Turtle toward the British fleet. 

Despite challenging tides, Lee managed to reach the primary target, Lord Howe’s flagship, the 64-gun ship of the line, HMS Eagle. The Turtle’s drill failed to penetrate the hull because it was blocked by an iron bar. With air running low, Lee abandoned the effort and released the mine, which floated free. The mine ultimately exploded in a massive blast that sent a plume of water into the night sky. 

The unexpected iron bar prevented what could have been a disastrous hit to a major target, potentially changing British naval tactics for the rest of the war. See my Yankee Doodle Spies post on "The Boat" for a more detailed discussion of this attack.

Bushnell remained undaunted. Confident in his progress, he kept improving the Turtle. He launched several small attacks on individual British ships, but inexperienced pilots and unfavorable tides prevented each attempt. The Turtle was lost the following October when a transport carrying it was sunk by British cannon fire on the North (Hudson) River. Undeterred by setbacks, Bushnell continued experimenting with naval mines and explosives. On August 13, 1777, he released another mine that floated toward the HMS Cerebus, anchored in Black Point Bay. This time, the tides were favorable, but the device got caught on a small schooner. It exploded, killing three British sailors.

He tried again in January 1778, this time releasing 20 large kegs filled with explosives off Bordentown, New Jersey. The kegs were intended to float down the Delaware River and destroy the British fleet at Philadelphia. One mine exploded near a British rowboat, killing several sailors. 

The attack so rattled the British fleet that it spent the rest of the day shooting at the floating kegs and nearly anything else that floated. This event was satirized in the poem, “Battle of Kegs,” by Francis Hopkinson. Rebel propaganda portrayed this as an embarrassment for the hapless Royal Navy. However, Bushnell's career as an undersea weapons developer was over.

The Sapper


Bushnell returned to Saybrook in the spring of 1778. Local Loyalists had once detained him, but he managed to secure his release. Later that year, Bushnell left the world of maritime warfare and joined the Continental Army after General George Washington appointed him as commander of the first company of sappers and miners at West Point, NY. Captain Bushnell served competently for the rest of the conflict and led the sappers during the siege of Yorktown, the battle that effectively ended the war. After his discharge from the Continental Army, he briefly returned to Connecticut and later spent some time in France before coming back to the United States to settle in Warrenton, Georgia, where he practiced medicine. He died there in 1824.

In the long run, David Bushnell’s efforts laid the groundwork for the later development of underwater mines, torpedoes, and, of course, the submarine. His fundamental use of water for ballast still applies today, as does the use of the propeller. Although his impact on the course of the American War for Independence was limited, he nonetheless shaped the future direction of naval warfare. No small feat for a Connecticut farm boy.

The First Baronet

Who is Peter Parker?


This edition of the Yankee Doodle Spies will recount the exploits of one Peter Parker. No, not that Peter Parker. Our Peter Parker was not a web-crawling teen like his comic book namesake. But before he was a teen, he was skipping along the rigging with a speed and grace that would make even Spider-Man jealous. This is our first naval topic in a while and focuses on a little-known British sailor who rose through the ranks due to long service, some patronage, good timing, and courage. Sometimes, all it takes to rise to the top is simply being there.

Our Peter Parker was born in Ireland in 1721, the son of Vice-Admiral Christopher Parker. Like all legacy officers of the Royal Navy, he started his career early, serving as a cabin boy and midshipman. During this period, he served on several ships under Vice-Admiral Edward Vernon of the West Indies station at the beginning of the War of Jenkins' Ear.

The eight-year War of the Austrian Succession provided plenty of action for the Royal Navy and numerous opportunities for up-and-coming young officers like Peter. Parker received his lieutenant’s commission in the summer of 1743 aboard the HMS Russell, a second-rate, 80-gun ship of the line. He served on several warships at various stations, most notably in the Mediterranean, where he participated in the battle of Toulon on February 11, 1744, aboard the flagship of Rear-Admiral William Rowley, the 90-gun HMS Barfleur.

In May 1747, he was promoted to captain and commissioned a captured French privateer as the 24-gun frigate HMS Margate. Captain Parker commanded this vessel in the Channel, the North Sea, and the Mediterranean. When she was paid off in April 1749, he had a brief stint aboard the 66-gun HMS Lancaster before going on half-pay with the end of the war. It was common practice to place officers on half-pay during periods between active conflicts.

Seven Years of War


Captain Parker remained ashore on half-pay for several years while overseeing the construction of the 44-gun HMS Woolwich in Portsmouth. With the outbreak of the Seven Years’ War, he went to sea on the Woolwich and commanded it on a voyage to the Baltic Sea. However, he fell seriously ill during the trip after catching a fever that swept through the ship.

After he recovered, the navy sent him to the Leeward Islands in December 1756, where, in January 1759, he transferred to the 50-gun HMS Bristol. Parker commanded the Bristol during the unsuccessful campaign against Martinique and later in the campaign that captured Guadeloupe.

In 1760, he returned to his home station in the Channel, where he took command of the 64-gun HMS Montague. Parker captured several prize ships while navigating the narrow but dangerous waters between Britain and the Continent. His success earned him command of the 70-gun HMS Buckingham and a squadron that dismantled French fortifications on the Isle d’Aix. The next year, he took part in the assault on a fort at Belle-Isle. This was typical 18th-century warfare, involving the capture of positions and negotiations to secure a better peace. But fierce action and naval skill made this possible. His last wartime command was the 74-gun HMS Terrible just before the 1763 Treaty of Paris.

Another Half-Pay Hiatus


The 1763 Treaty of Paris placed Parker and most of his fellow officers on half-pay. This half-pay status aimed to cut costs while keeping experienced officers available for future conflicts. In the 18th-century Royal Navy, there was always the next war. Parker stayed without a command for nearly ten years. But then things changed. Knighted in 1772, Sir Peter Parker was given command of the second-rate but heavily armed (90-gun) HMS Barfleur when he rejoined the service in 1773. By then, tensions were rising in the North American colonies. In 1775, Parker was assigned to command the fourth-rate 50-gun HMS Bristol, but more importantly, he was soon to command a squadron and promoted to commodore.

War of Rebellion


In February 1776, Captain Peter Parker was appointed commodore of a small squadron at Plymouth and tasked with transporting several Irish regiments under General Charles Cornwallis to America. The destination was the Cape Fear region of North Carolina. This was part of a complicated plan in which he would work with North Carolina’s infamous Royal Governor Josiah Martin and General Henry Clinton to rally Loyalist support in the unrest-filled colony.

Ill-Fated Southern Rendezvous


Bad weather and bad luck thwarted these efforts. A rough Atlantic voyage followed, and by the time Parker’s fleet reached its rendezvous with Clinton, the expected Loyalist uprising they depended on had been crushed. To their dismay, they learned of the decisive battle at Moores Creek Bridge on February 21, 1776. 

The resettled Scots Highlanders of the Carolina hill country had agreed to march to the coast in support of the crown. Ironically, many of them had been resettled after the disaster at Culloden decades earlier in Scotland. Now, they had taken up the claymore for the crown that defeated them in 1745. The Highlanders’ attack was easily scattered by the rebels from the coastal Tidewater—thus, there was no force to link up with.

But no armada should ever go to waste, so Parker and Clinton shifted their focus south to Charleston, South Carolina. The town was seen as being poorly defended. Quickly capturing it would provide a good naval base in the South and a safe haven for Loyalists across the region. The idea of winning hearts and minds remained a central part of the British approach to the war.

On June 1, 1776, Parker’s flotilla was off Charleston, but the lack of charts (see the Yankee Doodle Spies Blog Post on hydrography) forced the British to sound the waters while they waited for the tides to favor an attack. It was a good plan given the circumstances, but the delay allowed the American commander, Colonel William Moultrie, time to strengthen the defenses of Fort Sullivan on Sullivan’s Island.

On June 28, Parker finally managed to land British troops on Long Island, the island further up the coast to the northeast of Sullivan’s Island, and positioned ships where they could bombard the island. Despite a severe bombardment, the defenders held their ground, shielded by Fort Sullivan’s palmetto walls. The spongy bark of the palmetto logs absorbed cannon fire. The defenders had only a few guns, but Moultrie utilized these effectively. He concentrated their fire on Parker’s flagship, HMS Bristol. In a stroke of bad luck, the ship’s cable was severed. Out of control, the Bristol swung around, and the guns from the fort unleashed enfilade fire upon her.

Our commodore bravely stood his post on the quarterdeck in the finest tradition of the Royal Navy. But a heated cannonball, deadly red-hot shot, burned his pants off his rear end and caused serious injuries. Meanwhile, things worsened further. To avoid capture, the frigate HMS Actaeon ran onto shoals and ran aground. Under American fire, the resourceful British sailors set their ship ablaze to prevent it from being captured. The intense fighting continued for 10 hours. Finally, with casualties exceeding 250, Parker signaled the flotilla to break off, and they disengaged.

Parker’s failure at Charleston preserved the South for the cause, at least for a few years. The resulting boost in American morale rallied southern patriots and subdued southern Loyalists. In this type of war, morale would prove to be decisive.

With their commodore recovering from his burns, Parker’s flotilla returned to New York. There, it joined the fleet under Admiral Richard Howe. Commodore Parker recovered enough to command the squadron that captured Long Island in August 1776. At that time, his ships supported the landing of British troops on Long Island, forcing the rebel army to retreat from New York City.

In December 1776, Parker was entrusted with command of a flotilla that carried an invasion force under Henry Clinton in another successful operation: capturing Newport, Rhode Island. This gave the British an extra base from which to threaten Massachusetts and Connecticut. More maritime success for the commodore that would not go unnoticed.

Commodore Parker stayed at Rhode Island for nearly a year with two 50-gun warships and several frigates under his command. Although the assignment seemed like a remote posting, his career was about to take a turn toward higher rank: flag officer!

  Parker was promoted to rear admiral on April 28, 1777. He was soon named commander of the Jamaica Station (not the subway stop). By that time, British strategy had shifted to capturing as much of the West Indies as possible. The rest of the war focused on supporting efforts there against the French and Spanish. He performed his duties well and was promoted again to rear admiral in March 1779.

His time in America ended in 1782, and Parker returned to England in August of that year. He had the distinct privilege of carrying the captured French admiral, Francois-Joseph-Paul, Comte de Grasse, and his staff as prisoners from the Battle of the Saintes. Despite the defeat at the Saintes, de Grasse gained honors for his victory at the Battle of the Chesapeake in 1781-a rare defeat of the Royal Navy that set the stage for American victory. One can only wonder about the sea stories they shared over wine during the voyage back! In London, de Grasse would set the stage for negotiations that led to the Treaty of Paris, which ended the American War for Independence.

Service in American waters brought Parker great distinction, despite Charleston. He was elevated to baronet in 1783 and appointed commander of Portsmouth Harbor, the home port of the Royal Navy. During this time, he met and mentored a young Lieutenant Horatio Nelson, the future victor of Trafalgar. Parker helped Nelson early in his career, and for that, the British should hold him in high regard. Parker was named admiral of the fleet in September 1799 after the death of Admiral Lord Howe. He was also appointed a general of marines. Sadly, one of Parker’s last official acts was serving as the chief mourner at Vice-Admiral Lord Nelson’s funeral on 9 January 1806.

An MP


While not unusual for military officers of that era, Parker served in Parliament as the MP for Seaford from 1784 to 6. In 1787, he became the MP for Malden, holding the position until 1790. Parker’s West Indian prize money enabled him to build an estate in Essex, although his parliamentary address was registered as Bassingbourn in Cambridgeshire. He supported the government but delivered only two speeches during his time in the House of Commons. 

As a Member of Parliament, Parker held pro-slavery views, stating that “the abolition of the Africa Trade would, in my opinion, cause a general despondency amongst the Negroes and gradually decrease their population and consequently the produce of our islands, and must in time destroy near half our commerce and take from Great Britain all the pretensions to the rank she now holds as the First Maritime power in the World.”

True to his class and position, Parker made a good match in his family life by marrying Margaret Nugent. They had two sons and two daughters, with one son, Christopher, rising to Vice Admiral.

Admiral Sir Peter Parker, 1st Baronet, was regarded as tough and opinionated, yet well-respected for his composure and coolness in action. After all, how many admirals continued to fight with their pants seared off? While he was considered cantankerous, he met his match with Margaret, who had a very strong personality. During his command period in Jamaica, she was almost his equal in managing the station. He died in London on December 21, 1811, and was buried at St. Margaret's, Westminster.

Legacy


Peter Parker's career, reminiscent of Forrest Gump, spanned decades, continents, battles, and interactions with prominent figures of the 18th-century Royal Navy — a path that was not unusual. After all, building an empire often requires men to place themselves in strange situations, sometimes for years at a time. Naval officers frequently came from a long line of naval leaders. 

As we see, Parker's lineage was notably distinguished. Besides being the son and father of an admiral, he was also the grandfather of one. Parker's use of patronage helped elevate his son Christopher (who served under him) to captain and then admiral at a young age. Christopher's son, Captain Peter, the renowned 2nd Baronet, also served under his grandfather and alongside Horatio Nelson. 

The second Peter Parker fought in America, just like his father and grandfather, during the War of 1812. In 1814, near Baltimore, he was shot in the pants during combat, similar to the first Sir Peter — though sadly, it proved to be fatal. He was buried at St. Margaret's.

Fort Mifflin

A War of Posts


Over eight years of struggle, the American Revolutionary War shifted from guerrilla warfare to limited battles, and sometimes to maneuver warfare. However, the demands of 18th-century fighting across a vast area filled with rough terrain, dense forests, and uncooperative rivers made it almost always a war of posts. A war of posts is similar to a chess match, with carefully placed defensive positions designed to protect supply lines, stop an enemy advance, and control vital regions. 

Think of the game, Risk, but with real people, sweat, and effort, not small wooden or plastic pieces. The fight for North America included several key battles featuring fixed fortifications. In many ways, these defined the war: West Point and Ticonderoga immediately come to mind. But many battles also involved temporary or hastily constructed forts. These were just as important. Fort Moultrie, Stony Point, and Yorktown serve as notable examples.

The Siege


The war featured several key sieges. Most were short-lived, with one side surrendering or the other breaking off the siege due to outside factors like weather, supplies, or reinforcements. Fort Stanwix, Savannah, Charleston, and Newport are examples. Even a brief defense of a position could buy crucial time for a commander to gather forces, regroup, maneuver for advantage, or simply escape. 

That’s why, when a commander faced a long siege or was forced to storm a position, they often treated the defenders and any civilians left behind harshly. Ironically, when the British treated defenders roughly, it fueled rebel propaganda, which played a significant role in the conflict. Not only was the American public watching closely, but the whole world was paying attention. That’s a topic for another post, however.

Arguably, the longest active defense of a post under siege in the war was also one of the least celebrated. We will try to shift the focus toward celebration. Fort Mifflin is located on the Delaware River, in what is now South Philadelphia, at a place called Mud Island. Construction on the fort began in 1772 to block access to the city. 

Ironically, the original construction was overseen by the famous British engineer Captain John Montressor. The fort was completed in 1777 under the leadership of American Major General Thomas Mifflin, for whom it is named. It protected a series of water barriers that stretched across the river to its sister fort, Fort Mercer, in New Jersey.

Most Formidable Defenses


A fort guarding a sea approach needed more than just strong walls and good firing positions. So, Philadelphia built a series of chevaux de frise, placed in "tiers" beneath the waters of the Delaware between Forts Mercer and Mifflin. They were constructed within wooden-framed boxes, 30 feet square, made from massive timbers lined with pine boards. The engineers sunk these frames into the riverbed. 

Each box was filled with 20 to 40 tons of stone to keep it in place. Each frame had two or three large timbers tipped with iron spikes set underwater and angled downstream. These chevaux created a tough obstacle that could trap unwary ships. The chain of chevaux had gaps so friendly shipping could pass through. The locations of these safe passages were tightly kept secret. Any British ship not caught on the spikes or caught in the chain still faced fire from the forts themselves.

A Strategic Position


The British captured Philadelphia in September 1777 through an overland campaign that avoided the fortified Delaware approach. However, the British commander in chief, General William Howe, now faced the urgency of establishing a communication line to the sea. He needed the protection of the Royal Navy and an open supply route, or his position in Philadelphia could become a liability. 

The British commander recognized that their control of the sea was an invaluable advantage over the Americans, which had to be leveraged to the fullest. Howe's brother, Admiral Richard "Black Dick" Howe, commander of the Royal Navy in America, had already started weakening American defenses downriver. But brother Billy couldn't wait for their arrival; he needed to advance overland against Fort Mifflin and hold the navy at Fort Mercer on the Jersey side.

But the American commander in chief, General George Washington, also recognized the importance of the Delaware. After being driven from near the capital following his defeat at Germantown, Washington prepared for a lengthy series of operations aimed at disrupting British efforts to strengthen their control over Philadelphia. 

On September 23, Washington sent Lieutenant Colonel Samuel Smith of the 4th Maryland Regiment with a detachment of Continentals to the fort on Mud Island in the Delaware River. 

Readers may recall I featured this first patriot in an earlier Yankee Doodle Spies post. Smith's initial force numbered 200 soldiers, along with Major Robert Ballard of Virginia, Major Simeon Thayer of Rhode Island, and Captain Samuel Treat of the Continental Artillery. Determined to hinder British plans at any cost, the Continentals began preparing defenses and calling in more troops. 

Eventually, they would have 400 men, which was far from enough to properly garrison a fort of Mifflin's size. This problem was similar to issues faced by other forces trying to hold forts Ticonderoga and Washington. Still, Smith and his men chose to make the best of the fort.

General Howe ordered a move against nearby Providence Island on October 10, 1777. Washington's land forces resisted but were quickly driven off, and soon heavy siege guns were positioned to face the American fort. Despite its strength, Fort Mifflin had not been heavily fortified against a threat from Philadelphia. 

Ironically, Captain John Montresor, who had designed and built Fort Mifflin, planned and constructed the siege works used against his own fort. The situation was certainly against the rebels. Soon, heavy cannonballs started crashing into the American positions. The intense pounding on that side of the fort was horrific, but the Americans fought valiantly, inflicting heavy damage on several British ships attempting to bypass upriver. 

The British mounted guns on floats, creating water batteries that moved closer to the besieged outpost. American casualties increased, and supplies dwindled during the month of relentless bombardment and hardship.

But Billie Howe's brother, "Black Dick," would have the final say. He finally managed to unleash the Royal Navy. On November 10, a floating battery with twenty-two heavy 24-pound guns came within 40 yards of the fort. 

At close range, the British gunners could do as much damage as they wanted. This ended up being the heaviest bombardment of the Revolutionary War. Shot and shell shattered walls and buildings. The defenders suffered severe injuries, with limbs torn away or crushed. 




The battle was leaning towards the besiegers, but Smith and the defenders were determined to hold the fort. Cold weather was arriving early, and if they could hold until the Delaware froze, the British supply line might be cut, forcing Howe's army to abandon the recently captured capital. 

On the British side, news of Major General John Burgoyne's army’s disastrous surrender at Saratoga increased pressure on both Howe brothers. A victory over the stubborn defenders could help boost the sagging morale. The stakes were high for both sides!


The Pennsylvania Navy (yes, they had a navy) came to the aid of the forts guarding the Delaware approaches. Commodore John Hazelwood, with a sizable fleet of galleys, sloops, and fire-vessels, launched several raids on British positions onshore and constantly harassed British river operations while patrolling the waters around the fort. But British naval strength eventually prevailed. Rebel resistance persisted. Cold, ill, and starving, the garrison, reduced to much less than 200 of the original 400-450 men, refused to surrender. 

Under the leadership of French Major Francois de Fleury, an engineer of remarkable energy, the Americans worked each night to repair the damage from the day’s combat. Fleury himself was wounded in the battle. A British ship of the line and sloop-of-war both ran aground under heavy fire from Mifflin's defenders. However, British naval superiority virtually guaranteed an unfavorable outcome. Behind the cover of the intense fire from the big guns of the floating battery, the British naval vessels closed in, and soon British marines were sniping at the fort from high in the rigging. With nearly all their guns knocked out, the Americans were running out of options - but not out of spirit.

Clear weather on November 15 gave the British a chance to deliver a final burst of heat. They sent two ships, Vigilant and Fury, armed with nineteen guns, along the backchannel west of Fort Mifflin. At the same time, three large ships with 158 cannons anchored directly off the fort, in the main channel of the Delaware. To the east, three more vessels with about 51 guns guarded Mifflin from all sides. A trap of smoke, fire, and iron.

To oppose this British juggernaut, the defenders of Fort Mifflin had only ten cannons remaining. Soon, hundreds of cannonballs began pummeling what was left of the fort. The large-caliber 18- and 24-pound balls tore through the defenders in another burst of smoke and fire. During the peak of the bombardment, about 1000 shots were fired into the fort. 

To worsen the defenders' plight, British Marines climbed to the crow’s nest of Vigilant and tossed grenades at the fort's defenders. The defenders fought bravely but suffered for it as casualties increased. They returned fire until all their guns were silenced by the heavier British shot. Lieutenant Colonel Smith was seriously wounded and had to be evacuated. The end was near.



The End



Nightfall found the surviving defenders exhausted, cold, and out of ammunition. But not out of options. The new commander of the fort, Major Simeon Thayer, decided to evacuate the now indefensible Mifflin under the cover of darkness. The garrison rowed their way with muffled oars to Fort Mercer. Forty men volunteered to stay behind and set fire to what was left. 

Their work done, around midnight, they also crossed the Delaware to the safety of New Jersey. But Thayer decided on one last act of resistance. So as the last of Mifflin's valiant defenders rowed to safety, they would see it ablaze - but they would see the flag still flying in a final gesture of defiance.

The Result


During the siege, about 400 American soldiers held off more than two thousand British troops and 250 ships. The Americans suffered over 250 killed and wounded and lost the fort. However, the time and resources spent by the Howe brothers to capture the fort and control the Delaware allowed Washington to move his army to White Marsh and ultimately reach the safety of winter quarters at Valley Forge, where a new American army was formed.

Aftermath


Fort Mifflin was rebuilt after the war and served as a U.S. base for many years, providing one of the strategic harbor defenses for Philadelphia. Later, it became a historic site. Today, only the white stone walls of the original Fort Mifflin remain. The pockmarks in these walls testify to the intensity of the British bombardment in 1777. Local residents refer to this siege and bombardment as the Battle of Mud Island. However, this once-critical fort in the defense of the Delaware and Philadelphia never saw military use again.

Rev War Hydrography

What the heck is Hydrography?


This past week, we celebrated "world hydrography day," so I thought I would reflect on this little-known science's importance to the American War for Independence. Let's begin with the definition of hydrography: the science that deals with measuring and describing the physical features of oceans, lakes, rivers, seas, and their surrounding coastal areas, especially concerning their use for navigation. Although the formal science of hydrography was not officially established until the late 18th century (by the French), evaluations of waterways had been vital to navigation safety for many centuries before, especially starting with the Age of Exploration. During the American Revolution, watermen with detailed knowledge of coastlines, rivers, and estuaries played a crucial role for both sides, but especially the British, who relied heavily on the Royal Navy for their strategic advantage.

Knowledge of the waterways and shorelines around Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Wilmington, and Charleston was crucial for warships, merchant vessels, smugglers, and privateers. This was especially true for the rebels, whose use of small craft and longboats was often their only defense against the diverse British ships. Local ferrymen, fishermen, and pilots were vital, and both sides competed fiercely for their services and loyalty. Failing to understand the features above and below the water, as well as the local tides, often resulted in disasters, big and small. In ancient (and maybe not so ancient) times, mariners called on Neptune, the god of the sea, for help when their knowledge of tides and shoals let them down. Here are some stories of Neptune's influence on the fight for independence...


The First Affair


The grounding of a ship before the American Revolution is a clear example of hydrography's influence. The so-called Gaspee Affair occurred on June 9, 1772. The HMS Gaspee, a British customs ship, ran aground in Rhode Island, where a group of Sons of Liberty attacked and set fire to the vessel. The British government threatened to send the American perpetrators to England for trial, but no arrests followed. Still, their threat to try Americans in England caused upset protests in the colonies, which learned about the incident from the Committees of Correspondence. The creation of these Committees of Correspondence eventually led to the founding of the First Continental Congress and, ultimately, the Declaration of Independence.

Gloucester


Neptune works both ways—he rarely takes sides. The Battle of Gloucester is a good example. It was a small fight early in the American Revolutionary War (August 8 or 9, 1775) at Gloucester, Massachusetts. Royal Navy Captain John Linzee, commanding the sloop-of-war HMS Falcon, saw two schooners coming back from the West Indies. After taking one schooner, Linzee chased the second (American) into Gloucester Harbor, where it ran aground. Linzee sent sailors to seize the prize. But, the townspeople called out their militia, who captured the British sailors sent to take the grounded ship. The militia also took back the ship. Local knowledge of the waters around Boston gave the New Englanders a big advantage against the strong land and naval forces during that crucial year.

Aside from this incident, Gloucester is known for being the home of the legendary Marblehead sailors, whose expertise and skill in navigating coastlines and riverways played a vital role in rescuing the Continental Army from defeat and facilitating Washington's Christmas night crossing of the Delaware River, which delivered a significant victory at Trenton.

The HMS Somerset began its service during the American Revolution by shelling Charlestown in 1775. The Somerset achieved great success operating in estuaries, bays, and rivers. It acted as the flagship headquarters at Bunker Hill (Breed's Hill).

The Somerset was involved in another brief but significant incident during the war, the Battle of Chelsea Creek. On the night of May 27, 1775, the armed schooner HMS Diana ran aground in Chelsea Creek while trying to stop Americans from driving British livestock off Noddle's Island in Boston Harbor. The American rebels set fire to the ship. HMS Somerset's tender, Britannia, was able to rescue the crew of the Diana. Later, it participated in the fierce river fighting at Fort Mifflin near Philadelphia.

The battle for Fort Mifflin involved ships and boats navigating the treacherous waters of the lower Chesapeake River. It was a desperate, prolonged siege, featuring land and naval forces that used the elements and geography to their advantage. The Somerset participated in the later phase, bombarding the fort from far offshore. Meanwhile, other small vessels navigated dangerous waters in the turbulent ebb and flow of fierce combat that lasted for weeks. To prevent the British from using two nearby islands, the Americans breached the riverside dikes.

 

This action forced the British to build their batteries on top of the dikes and work in knee-deep water. An example of the challenges faced is when the British lost an 8-inch howitzer and a soldier drowned when the craft carrying the gun sank in the Schuylkill. While bombarding Fort Mifflin, the Augusta and Merlin ran aground. A high tide that evening was met with contrary winds that hindered the depth needed for the ships to be freed.

 

On October 23, 1777, the American forts focused their fire on the two stranded ships. HMS Isis maneuvered alongside the grounded sixty-four in an effort to rescue it. British accounts claimed that American gunnery caused only minor damage, though flaming wads from the ships' guns set the Augusta on fire. At midday, the Augusta exploded with a tremendous blast that shattered windows in Philadelphia. An eyewitness reported that 60 sailors, a lieutenant, and the ship's chaplain died while struggling in the water. The loud explosion was heard nearly 30 miles away in Trappe, Pennsylvania. After the Augusta's destruction, the crew of the Merlin set their ship on fire and abandoned it.

But Neptune's favor for Somerset ended when she ran aground off Provincetown in 1778. Over 100 of her men were taken prisoner by angry locals who made them walk back to Boston, a distance of more than 125 miles! The wreck of the Somerset surfaced in those waters after a storm in 1886, and again in January 2008.

When the British drove the Continental Army out of New York City in 1776, their knowledge of the waterways and islands proved essential. Although they had no shortage of sympathizers familiar with the waters, the Americans did as well. The farther the British moved away from the "safe zone" of New York Island (Manhattan) and Long Island, the more risky the situation became. In 1776, to prevent an attempt at naval encirclement, the rough shoreline and waters of the Bronx forced General Howe to attempt landing further north near Pelham. This delay allowed the Americans to shift forces to defend the Continental Army and keep their lines of communication intact.

The coves along the north shore of Long Island allowed rebels to slip boats in and out without usually risking detection. This helped one of George Washington's most famous spy rings gather intelligence across the Long Island Sound to American-held Connecticut (where knowledge of the cost was just as important).

During the War of Independence, the great Sandy Hook was more than just the peninsula extending from the Jersey shore today. The "hook" stretched across the harbor's mouth as a huge sandbar, blocking ships of the line and frigates from passing in or out of Lower New York Bay except at high tide. This limited British options when they needed to send ships to sea quickly. Later in the war, a French fleet abandoned plans to attack New York for the same reason.

The Carolinas  


In the Cape Fear area near Wilmington, North Carolina, superior knowledge of the coastal and inland waterways enabled the rebels to prevent reinforcements by sea, keeping the crucial state in American hands from February 1777 until a second wave of British troops arrived in 1780. This marked the start of a prolonged guerrilla-style war along the dangerous Cape Fear River. British warships patrolled while blockade runners attempted to smuggle valuable supplies. Both sides depended on local knowledge of the waterways to succeed.

William Moultrie 
In neighboring South Carolina, local knowledge of the waterways and swamps in the Lowcountry played a crucial role in the struggle. The partisans along the coastal rivers proved to be a constant thorn in the side of the British, who needed two attempts to capture the port of Charleston. In the first attempt in 1776, famed South Carolinian William Moultrie's clever defense, along with the geography of the islands and waters, withstood a large British force of warships and soldiers. A key to his success was the use of palmetto logs for the fort.






The palmetto is very porous (spongy), and every time the British fired a cannon, the cannonball would get stuck in the fort and wouldn’t explode. If it did explode, the fort's sand walls would fall apart and put out the fire. Confused because the fort wasn’t burning, the British moved closer. Bad idea. Three of His Majesty’s ships ran aground on a sandbar, now the site of Fort Sumter. There, they became easy targets for patriots. Francis Marion, who would later become famous as the “Swamp Fox,"
